The Narrow Road – Part 2 (Diaspora Edition)

“But small is the gate and narrow and difficult to travel is the path that leads the way to [everlasting] life…” – Matthew 7:14 (AMP)

Yesterday, we began to contrast the narrow and wide roads set before believers.

For believers living in the diaspora – away from your community – the narrow road often feels even more complex. You are navigating new cultures, expectations, and spiritual environments while trying to remain grounded in Christ.

Again, the contrast remains clear:

  • The sin road rejects God openly.
  • The wide road accommodates culture without surrender.
  • But the narrow road chooses obedience, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Jesus’ description of the narrow road (stenos – restricted, hodos – way of life, thlibō – pressed) reminds us that this journey will require intentional, sometimes difficult choices. Many in the diaspora have faced real questions:

  1. Do I participate in celebrations like Halloween that conflict with my convictions?
  2. How do I stay rooted when I struggle to connect with a new church?
  3. What do I do when worship styles feel unfamiliar or less reverent?
  4. How do I maintain spiritual discipline in a fast-paced, busy life?

My own family had to choose between elite football competitions showcasing our sons’ God-given talents or Sunday worship. The wide road says, “Adapt so you can fit in.”

The narrow road says, “Remain faithful so you can stand out.”

Every cultural tension becomes an opportunity to choose: compromise or conviction, convenience or calling.

The narrow road is not about isolation from culture, but transformation within it. It is living differently and loving (God) deeply. Worship may look different, but true worship is not style – it is spirit and truth (John 4:24). Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you.

Prayer

Father, help me walk faithfully in unfamiliar spaces. Keep my heart grounded in Your truth, not swayed by culture or pressure. Teach me to live the narrow way with clarity, courage, and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
